How does the inflated cuff help measure blood pressure? Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood on the walls of the blood vessels. To measure this force it is necessary to apply a force in the opposite direction. Inflating the cuff applies force on the outside of the blood vessels. If the force is great enough the blood vessel is compressed and blood can no longer flow through it. The lack of a pulse below the cuff indicates that the pressure inside the cuff exceeds the pressure within the artery or vein.
