Chapter Twelve gives an overview of the rebirth of western theatrical activity during the Renaissance. Theater in Italy, England, Spain and France is profiled. After reading this chapter you should:
1.
Understand that during the Renaissance the arts were re-awakened in Western Europe. The radical cultural and social changes in each of the different countries gave rise to remarkable developments in theater, especially in Italy, England, Spain, and France.
2.
Be familiar with the transformations of theater in Italy occurring between 1550 and 1650:
  • Commedia dell'Arte
  • Opera
  • Italian Dramatic Rules: The Neoclassical Ideals
  • Theater Production in Italy
3.
Understand the history of the development of theater during the "English Renaissance" or Elizabethan era (1564-1593):
  • Christopher Marlowe and the "Mighty Line"
  • William Shakespeare
  • Elizabethan Theatrical productions (note difference between public and private theaters)
  • English Actors and Acting Companies
4.
Be familiar with theater during James I reign until theater was outlawed in England in 1642.
5.
Be familiar with the description of a production of Hamlet in London in 1600.
6.
Be aware of the fact that theater had to compete with the popular arts of the English Renaissance for their audiences-bearbaiting and cockfighting. Understand that these violent forms of entertainment had an influence on stage fights and slapstick violence in theater.
7.
Understand the history of the development of theater during the "Spanish Golden Age" (1550 - 1650):
  • Secular drama
  • The Corrales
  • Spanish acting companies
8.
Be familiar with the descriptions of two productions: one of The King, The Greatest Alcade in Madrid in 1620; and the other of Tartuffe in Paris in 1669.
9.
Be familiar with the transformations in the theater of France during the seventeenth century:
  • The Neoclassical Era
  • Theater Production in France
10.
Be familiar with the following people:
