1

Independent Reflection:

Supporting Language Development

Write a brief overview of the language development of children living in poverty conditions. What can teachers and schools do to help support language development in impoverished students? What impact can language development have on the future success of children? (INTASC: Principles 2, 3, 6).
2

Collaborative Work:

Comparing Cognitive Differences Among Children

Select the general age of the children you expect to one day teach. Make a list of that age group's characteristic ways of thinking according to Piaget's theory of cognitive development. With three or four other students in the class, compare your lists. In what important cognitive ways do the children represented in your lists differ? How will these differences impact the teaching methods you use in the classroom? (INTASC: Principles 2, 3)
3

Research/Field Experience Reflections:

The Brain and Children's Education

Find an education article in a magazine or on the Internet that promotes "left-brained" and "right-brained" activities for learning. Write a critical review of the article based on what you learned in this chapter. (INTASC: Principles 3, 7, 9)
